Lesson 3 — Compare Spanish and English: Can and Puedo

    What You Will Learn

English “can + action” and Spanish “puedo + infinitive”

    Puedo hablar.

    English translation: I can speak.

    Spanish partsEnglish parts
puedo + hablarI can + speak
The Spanish action keeps its infinitive ending: hablar.English uses the base action after can. It does not say “can to speak.”
Explain the difference: Both languages place the ability builder before the action. Spanish keeps the full infinitive. English uses the base verb without to after can.
Easy learning rule: After puedo, use the Spanish infinitive. After English can, use the English base verb without to.
    Puedo practicar.→I can practise.
    Puedo entrar.→I can enter.
    No puedo salir.→I cannot leave.

    Lesson 3 · Comparison practice 1

    Notice the Spanish infinitive

You are stating one ability. Type “I can speak” in Spanish.

    Lesson 3 · Comparison practice 3

    Keep the Spanish infinitive

Type “I can confirm” in Spanish.

    Lesson 3 · Comparison practice 4

    Correct the mixed-language structure

Write the correct Spanish message for “I can reserve.” Do not put English “to” inside the Spanish message.

    Lesson 3 · Comparison practice 5

    Use the same rule negatively

Translate “No puedo salir” into natural English.

    Pattern Reminder

Keep the action in the correct form

Spanish: puedo + infinitive. English: I can + base verb, without to.
